How to move from proficiency to mastery
With more than 25 years of practice and experience as a student and teacher of Kuk Sool, I’ve realised that martial arts isn’t just about collecting techniques or achieving ranks, it’s an amazing journey of skill development and personal growth.
Along this path, we encounter three key milestones:
1. Proficiency
2. Competence
3. Mastery
Each represents a distinct training phase, with its own challenges, rewards and lessons. Let’s explore these concepts and how they relate to our practice of Kuk Sool.
1. Proficiency

Laying the foundation for skill development.
In the early stages of martial arts training, students focus on developing proficiency. This is where we lay the foundation for everything that follows. Proficiency means performing techniques or movements with accuracy, consistency and control. In Kuk Sool, it starts with the basics: kicks, punches, stances, joint locks, throws and forms.
At this stage, repetition is key. Each of these martial arts techniques must be practised repeatedly, not to achieve perfection, but to create movement patterns that can be reliably recalled confidently.
Proficiency is about understanding the “how” of a movement:
- how to deliver a powerful punch
- how to execute a clean spin kick
- how to maintain balance during a dynamic form.
Students who reach proficiency demonstrate discipline and focus, but they’re still learning to connect the dots. It often feels like doing a jigsaw puzzle without seeing the full picture.
Proficiency is the ability to execute techniques or skills correctly and consistently under standard conditions. It reflects a solid level of knowledge and practice.
Proficiency in practice:
- a proficient martial artist demonstrates accurate techniques, good form and reliable execution during drills or controlled settings like forms
- this level often corresponds to intermediate training where the practitioner understands the “how” but is still refining the “when” and “why” of techniques
- a student who can perform a basic punch or kick with correct form in a structured environment.
2. Competence

Turning techniques into applicable skills.
As students progress in Kuk Sool, they develop competence and the ability to apply their skills effectively in dynamic situations. This is the phase where techniques become tools and practitioners learn the “when” and “why” behind their movements.
Competence emerges through sparring, self-defence training and understanding the principles that underpin each technique.
For example:
- when to use a particular joint lock during a confrontation
- why distance and timing are critical in any situation.
Competence is where the art begins to come alive. It’s no longer just about performing a technique, it’s about adapting it to the situation at hand. At this level, students start to embody the philosophy of Kuk Sool through You Won Hwa (Flowing Circular Harmony) and demonstrate Hyung Bup (Principles of Forms). They may begin to recognise that martial arts is as much about mental clarity and strategy as it is about physical skill.
Competence is the ability to apply learned skills effectively and appropriately in a variety of situations, including under pressure or in less controlled environments.
Competence in practice:
- a competent martial artist can adapt techniques in sparring, self-defence scenarios or real-life applications
- competence reflects a deeper understanding of distance, timing and strategy, knowing not just how to perform a technique, but when and why to use it
- a practitioner who can defend themselves effectively in a sparring match by applying their techniques with intention and adaptability.
3. Mastery

The journey beyond techniques, embracing lifelong learning and leadership.
Reaching mastery in Kuk Sool is both an achievement and a profound responsibility. As a 5th Dahn Master, I can tell you that mastery is not about having perfected the art, it’s not about knowing everything, I believe it’s about embracing the mindset of a lifelong student.
Mastery transcends technique. It’s about understanding the principles, philosophies and history of Kuk Sool on a deep level. It’s about embodying the values of discipline, humility and respect while inspiring others to pursue their own journey.
At this stage, techniques become second nature. The focus shifts from learning to creating, from following to leading. A master isn’t just someone who can perform, they are someone who can teach, guide and innovate within the art.
But here’s the secret. Mastery isn’t about perfection or a final destination. Even at 5th Dahn, I recognise there’s still so much to learn. Every training session, every student I teach and every challenge I face reveals new layers of understanding. That’s the beauty of Kuk Sool, it’s a path without end, where growth is infinite.
Mastery is the highest level of skill and understanding, where the practice becomes second nature and the martial artist brings creativity, intuition and personal expression to their art.
Mastery in practice:
- a master transcends technique, understanding the principles and philosophies behind the art
- they can teach, innovate and seamlessly integrate techniques into any situation
- mastery is not just about physical skill but also about embodying the values and mindset of the martial art, such as discipline, humility and continuous learning
- a black belt instructor or master who can effortlessly adapt to any opponent, teach complex concepts to students and exemplify the spirit of the art
- mastery is about becoming one with the art.
How these levels shape your martial arts journey

Whether you’re just starting out in Kuk Sool or working your way through the ranks, remember this.
Proficiency is the ability to execute techniques or skills correctly and consistently under standard conditions. It reflects a solid level of knowledge and practice.
Competence is the ability to apply learned skills effectively and appropriately in a variety of situations, including under pressure or in less controlled environments.
Mastery is the highest level of skill and understanding, where the practice becomes second nature, and the martial artist brings creativity, intuition and personal expression to their art.
Each stage is valuable and builds on the last. There’s no rushing the process, it takes years of dedication and practice. But along the way, you’ll find that the journey itself is just as rewarding as the destinations.
