“Well, I’d love to! But I need to get back in shape first.”

Hey there, folks!

Today, I want to dive into a topic that seems to come up regularly. I’m pretty sure many of you have had this same conversation before.

So, picture this, I’m having a casual chat with a student who used to train Kuk Sool and I say:

“Hey, you used to love Kuk Sool training right? You should come back to training!”

And he responds:

“Well, I’d love to! But I need to get back in shape first.”

Now, hold on a second. Have you ever been in a similar situation? You know, where you think you need to get fit before you can even think about hitting the gym or getting on the mats? It’s a common mindset, but let’s break it down.

It’s like thinking you need to get smart first before you can go to school to learn. It just doesn’t make any sense, does it? Of course it doesn’t.

Sure, Kuk Sool is about self-defence and martial arts training, but let’s not forget it’s also an incredible workout with loads of proven benefits for your health and wellbeing. And here’s the kicker, if you’re thinking of skipping it because you think you need to get in shape first, you’re missing out big time. Trust me on this!

Now, I get it. We all have our reasons for not diving back into something we used to love. Maybe you have a legitimate reason, like a broken leg, or some exercise-induced angina. But if you’re avoiding it simply because you feel out of shape, I’ve got news for you, that’s not a valid excuse.

Let’s be real here. It’s fun, it makes you better at self-defence, it’s an awesome way to make new friends and become part of a community, and yes, it’s a proven way to get in shape. So, why hold back?

Now, for those of you who used to train but stopped for whatever reason, I get it. Life happens. But do you want to be the person who used to train, or do you want to be the one who took a break but got right back into it? Be honest with yourself.

Here’s a little secret. No matter how fit you are, you’re going to have moments where you feel like you’re struggling. As the old saying goes, ‘it doesn’t get easier, you just get better’. It’s part of the journey.

You don’t need to shed a few pounds or get super fit before starting. Those changes will happen naturally as you train. So, put down that doughnut, peel yourself off the sofa and head to the Dojang. I promise you won’t regret it!

So, what do you think? Are you ready to get back on the mats? We have regular martial arts classes suitable for returning students and total beginners at Strive in Kirkcaldy.
